The Middlesex town of Hanwell, in the Ealing district of London, was mentioned in the Domesday Book and can trace its history back to 959 when it was known as Hanewelle. The earliest record of racing taking place on Hanwell Heath was a 3 day meeting from Wednesday 8th to Friday 10th July 1761. Although the first and last days were dominated by pony races, with Mr Nalder winning both races with his brown pony, the Thursday card contained the Hanwell Heath Purse which was won by Bold Stag owned by Mr Pereira. Recorded meetings were few and far between, but the next meeting was staged on Thursday 5th April 1832. There was a further gap of 33 years before a steeplechase meeting took place on Saturday 18th March 1865 on a piece of land in Hanwell owned by Mr Withers. The Steeplechase for a handsome cup was over a demanding 2 mile course and saw Mr Greenfield’s Sweep beat Remunerator and Snowdrop. There are no further records of racing under rules taking place in Hanwell. |
